Grant McCasland has worked his way into a steady coaching gig in the stacked Big 12. After an Elite Eight run last year, he inked a six-year, $31.5 million extension to make him part of the top-25 highest-paid coaches in the nation. The deal through the 2030-31 season came with a salary increase of over $5 million per year, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

McCasland was considered one of the top coaching candidates in college basketball during the latest cycle. His immediate success in Lubbock has caught the attention of many schools looking to poach him. One of those has been North Carolina as a possible replacement for Hubert Davis, who was fired after a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament to VCU.

There's little doubt why McCasland is viewed as a strong option. He's the 19th head coach in Red Raider history and owns the best record for a head coach through his first three seasons.

Grant McCasland buyout terms

With McCasland's name being floated around right now, any program looking to take a swing would have to pay out an eight-figure sum. His substantial buyout acts as a barrier for other schools. As of now, the total sits at $10 million, which is 40 percent of what's left on his initial deal from 2023.

The terms aren't the worst in the country, but there is still a significant amount upfront for his services. McCasland is one of 28 coaches with a buyout of $10 million or more, according to USA TODAY Sports.

Where does this leave McCasland going into the 2026-27 season?

McCasland has gone 74-31 at Texas Tech with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. The Red Raiders took a second-round loss this year without star forward JT Toppin, who tore his ACL before the postseason. Many analysts projected Tech to make a deep tourney run before losing Toppin.
