The Cincinnati Reds have endured an up and down season up to this point. Cincinnati improved its record to 38-42 after defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 6-4 on Friday. Sal Stewart went 1-4 in the game to go along with one run scored.
Stewart has now played 80 games in his rookie season, so how has he performed? What is his season grade through 80 games played?
It is no secret that the Reds have needed an offensive boost. Stewart has been able to provide the lineup with a crucial impact. While he's been inconsistent at times, Stewart is helping matters overall.
The 22-year-old infielder is hitting .249/.340/.445 across 80 games played. He has also hit 14 home runs and 17 doubles to go along with 11 stolen bases.
Defensively, he is capable of moving around the infield. He has spent time at first base, third base and second base (as well as designated hitter) this season. 51 of Stewart's contests have been played at first base, but his defensive versatility makes him even more valuable to the Reds.
However, Stewart's bat is the most exciting part of his game. He can hit for power and average, and he will likely provide value in Cincinnati's lineup for years to come. His potential is intriguing to say the least.
Stewart is certainly going to be in the conversation for National League Rookie of the Year. In fact, he may even earn some All-Star recognition. He is playing well overall despite his ups and downs at times.
The Reds have to be impressed with Stewart's overall performance. So, what grade should he get for his performance up to this point?
Well, his inconsistency makes it difficult to give him an A. He's played well, but it is not as if Stewart is having an elite rookie season. However, anything lower than a B feels disrespectful, as Stewart has unquestionably impressed.
Of course, his full season grade could look quite different. Stewart could end up having a huge second half of the season. Through 80 games played, though, Stewart has been very good but not great. And that's okay. His ceiling remains extremely high.
With all of that being said, a B feels right for Sal Stewart's season grade through 80 games played so far in 2026.
