Gophers starting quarterback Drake Lindsey was contrite on Tuesday, apologizing for his May 1 arrest for underage drinking and use of a fake ID in his hometown of Fayetteville, Ark.
“Grown from that and learn from that,” the 20-year-old said at a news conference at the U’s Larson Football Performance Center.
Lindsey said he “immediately apologized” to his teammates.
“We respect how he handled the situation,” said senior linebacker Maverick Baranowski. “We have his back.”
The Gophers are usually quiet and working out behind the schemes from the end of spring ball in late April until its internal media day in mid-July, but this availability created an opportunity for Lindsey to clear the air before that and ahead of Big Ten Media Days in Chicago on July 29.
Lindsey was arrested at a bar after 1 a.m. May 1 Fayetteville, Ark., police on the suspicion of underage drinking and use of fraudulent identification, according to records from the Washington County (Ark.) Sheriff’s Office.
Lindsey has a hearing scheduled for June 29 in Fayetteville, a court clerk told the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.
The Gophers said in May they were “aware of (Lindsey’s arrest) and will address it internally.”
Head coach P.J. Fleck said Tuesday that Lindsey needs to make better decisions and take accountability for his actions. Fleck said they are handling any punishment within the program, but did not share what that will entail. Fleck said the punishment is not considered resolved, but Fleck would not say whether Lindsey will miss playing time.
Fleck later complimented the way Lindsey was working in summer workouts.
Lindsey’s preliminary police report last month said a Fayetteville officer was notified by staff at the Yeehawg bar to the possible use of a fake ID. Police questioned Lindsey; he admitted to using the ID; and said he consumed alcohol prior to arriving at the downtown bar.
After being handcuffed and booked at a juvenile detention center, another copy of the fake ID was located in Lindsey’s wallet. The report said Lindsey continued to cooperate with police and signed a document acknowledging the use of a fraudulent or altered form of identification. He was released on bond after 8 a.m. May 1.
This fall, Lindsey will enter his redshirt sophomore season as a team captain and vital piece to their potential success. During his first year as a starter, Lindsey completed 63% of his passes for 2,382 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions in all 13 games.
The Gophers are amid summer workouts and will open the 2026 season Sept. 3 against Eastern Illinois at Huntington Bank Stadium.
