Akers was a 2nd round pick, right? So that’s a relatively expensive resource.
Not really for a starting RB. The 52nd pick for a guy who plays 50%+ of snaps isn't bad. Especially when it's on a rookie deal. It would be the same for an ILB or S. Maybe not ideal but when you cap and 1st round picks are going to your defensive front, one DB, OTs, WRs and QB...you can get away with it.

What is disgusting is that we aren't too far away from the Rams model, it is just that we are paying Jordan Phillips, Devon Kennard, and JJ Watt 45mil and the only guy to make an impact was Watt who played half a season.

The differences are that we are paying Budda, Pugh and Hicks. The Rams have shown they likely would have let those guys walk or passed on signing them in general. Also the problem with Simmons and Collins. You have to pay Hicks 9 mil because you want to baby them.

it is a pretty interesting dynamic with this being Keim's last year under contract

how does Mike B feel letting Steve K maybe make a bunch of decisions that impact the team for the next three years?

to do much of anything in Free Agency, they will have to restructure a bunch of players contracts to push $ into the future. You better do it for the right bunch of players.

Anyone you resign or bring in from outside will have a cap structured deal to minimize the 2022 hit, but increases the later years. This effectively makes them harder to cut.

i suspect Mike B feels like he has Quentin Harris and/or Adrian Wilson waiting to take over. I suppose he could get their input on all these moves ..... but if you do that, shouldnt you just move on from Keim now?

If Mike B. had a problem with that, Keim would already be gone. Harris and Wilson have input via Keim.

Ugh, a year left on his deal means he'll probably go "all in" by mortgaging the future for the now and crushing the team in cap hell like New Orleans.
