Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz revealed whether the team plans to use the franchise tag this offseason.
"I don't see us tagging anyone right now," Hortiz said at the NFL combine on Tuesday.
Edge rusher Odafe Oweh was considered a prime candidate for the tag in 2026, but it appears that they would rather try to lock him up to a long-term deal. Oweh's price tag could be over $20 million annually.
The NFL franchise tag is used by a team to prevent impending free agents from leaving the organization. It is a one-year, guaranteed contract tender that comes with a predetermined high salary.
There are two types of franchise tags: exclusive and non-exclusive. The first prevents players from negotiating with other teams. The non-exclusive franchise tag is the most common, and it allows a player to negotiate with other teams, but the original team can match any offer or will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if the player signs elsewhere.
The Chargers have only used the franchise tag eight times since 1993. The most notable franchise tag in recent seasons was Hunter Henry in 2020. Henry signed with the Patriots in free agency the following year.
