Girls basketball: Willmar Cardinals, NLS Wildcats, CMCS Bluejays learn their seeds for state

Mar. 7—MINNEAPOLIS — The Willmar, New London-Spicer and Central Minnesota Christian girls basketball teams learned who their opponents will be in the state tournament Saturday.

Willmar got the No. 8 seed in Class AAA and opens with No. 1 Stewartville at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus.

NLS is the No. 3 seed in Class AA. The Wildcats plays No. 6 Minnehaha Academy at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Maturi Pavilion.

And CMCS picked up the sixth seed in Class A. The Bluejays play No. 3 Kelliher-Northome at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Maturi Pavilion.

Seeds were determined by coaches participating in the tournament. Each ranked the field one through seven, not seeding their own team, and submitted their ballot on-line.

Class AAA begins with Willmar's game at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Other first-round games at Maturi Pavilion are: No. 5 Hill-Murray vs. No. 4 Cretin-Derham Hall at noon, No. 7 Rock Ridge plays Benilde-St. Margaret's at 2 p.m. and No. 6 Totino-Grace faces No. 3 Marshall at 4 p.m. The semifinals are noon and 2 p.m. Friday at Williams Arena with the championship set for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Class AA is split between two sites Wednesday. At 6 p.m. at Maturi, No. 7 Sauk Centre plays No. 2 Duluth Marshall. NLS plays after that one. At 6 p.m. at Williams, No. 8 Norwood Young America plays No. 1 Providence Academy and No. 5 Perham faces No. 4 Lourdes at 8 p.m.

The Class AA semifinals are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday at Williams, with the championship game set for 6 p.m. Saturday.

Class A begins Thursday at Maturi Pavilion. First-round pairings are No. 8 Braham vs. No. 1 Mountain Buhul at 11 a.m. No. 5 New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva vs. No. 4 Hillcrest Lutheran Academy at 1 p.m., No. 7 Mayer Lutheran vs. No. 2 Sleepy Eye St. Mary's at 3 p.m. and then followed by the CMCS game.

Class A semifinals are at noon and 2 p.m. Friday at Williams Arena. The championship is noon Saturday.
