Gillingham have competed the signing of James Brophy from Cambridge United on a two-year deal.

The versatile midfielder spent five years at Abbey Stadium and leaves having helped the club to achieve automatic promotion back to League One last season.

The 31-year-old becomes the Gills' first summer signing and admitted he was keen to make the move to Priestfield after talking to manager Gareth Ainsworth.

"I am really excited and really happy. I had a really good conversation with Gareth, I found him really relatable and genuine," Brophy said.

"I feel like I have got a lot of years left in me. I like to be positive on the pitch, I like to create goals and I think you are going to get someone that you know gives everything they can on the pitch."

Gillingham finished 17th in League Two last season with Ainsworth overseeing a recruitment restructure as they aim to challenge for promotion next term.
