The San Antonio Spurs experienced a remarkable turnaround last season, making an unexpected run all the way to the NBA Finals before falling short against the New York Knicks. Although Victor Wembanyama was unable to complete the journey with a championship, his incredible rise throughout the season placed him in conversations with some of the greatest players in NBA history.
Despite Wembanyama's historic performance, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas remains unconvinced that the Spurs superstar has reached the league's elite top-five level. During a recent discussion, Arenas argued that Wemby should not currently be considered among the five best players in the NBA.
“You got Luka, you got Giannis, you got Shai, you got Jokic, you know Kevin Durant is still playing? You know Giannis had a bad year it was 31 and 12? Listen 31 and 12 on a bad year that’s Giannis,” Arenas said.
“Like I don’t know who to put out of the top 5 because you’re putting him in the top 5 off of projection what you think he’s going to be versus you know, the actual output. Defensively he was 1, offensively he’s not top 10 offensively. So, if you’re talking about Giannis defensively he’s top 10 on both ends of the court which is very different.”
Wembanyama's impact was undeniable during San Antonio's historic campaign. His dominant two-way play helped lead the Spurs to a 62-win season. The French superstar became the first player ever to win Defensive Player of the Year unanimously after receiving all 100 first-place votes.
However, despite his incredible defensive impact, questions about his offensive ranking continue to surround the young superstar. Arenas' criticism specifically focused on whether Wembanyama's offensive production has reached the level required to be considered a top-five player.
Still, last season showed why many believe he is on a path toward superstardom. His defensive presence alone transformed the Spurs into championship contenders, while he averaged 25 points per game as the team's primary offensive option. Whether or not he is already a top-five player, Wembanyama's influence on the league is becoming impossible to ignore.
