Weird how a man, Russ Grimm, who has never even been an offensive or defensive coordinator is suddenly thought by many to be the front runner for the head coaching job in Washington because he once played there for the coach who just failed in his comeback attempt and resigned.

First off, how's 2 playoff appearances in 4 years a "failure"?

Secondly, Andy Reid was never an offensive or defensive coordinator. I'd like to believe he's had a fairly successful coaching career. Mike Tomlin was a defensive coordinator for a whopping 1 year.. He did fairly well running the Steelers this year. Mike Ditka never served as an offensive or defensive coordinator prior to taking over the Bears...

It's not THAT far fetched for someone who's never served as a coordinator to get a head coaching job.

My guesses and they are just opinionated guesses, are these:

No smart man will take the Skins job as long as Snyder is the owner.
Russ Grimm is a smart man.

Agree. Also Snyder will want a big name coach not an OL coach with no head coaching experience. We may end up losing Grimm but it won't be to Washington and probaly not this year.

Consider Grimm all but gone.

No doubt about it. In the skins playoff loss, every time the showed Gibbs on the sideline he had the look of a coach about to leave. this is the worst scenario the Cards could have had happen to them.

Snyder may want a big name coach, but really who's out there ripe for the pickings that fits that criteria??

Cowher won't take the job.

Schottenheimer? Been there, done that.

Billick? Maybe, but after he got bagged by the Ravens, his value's probably rather low at this point.

A hot shot college coach? Doubtful.. Not after the Steve Spurrier disaster and not after Bobby Petrino and Nick Saban ducked and ran back to the college game after short tenures.

Well.. Other than the fact that he spent 19 years as a Redskin (including 8 years as a coach), got his coaching start there, played under Gibbs who by all accounts is going to have a large say in who his predecessor is, is someone who Dan Snyder is familar with having worked with him in the past and the fact that the Redskin fanbase loves the guy?

No real concrete proof... None at all.

I know noone wants Grimm to leave, but this is the reality of things-- the Cardinals improved this season. Grimm was very much responsible for that growth. He's been a head coaching candidate/coach in the waiting since 2004. His value now may be HIGHER than it was in Pittsburgh.. This job would be an ideal one for him, allows him to work with players he's by and large familar with, an organization he's VERY familar with and take over a team that has made the playoffs two of the last three seasons.

Is there some sort of time travel involved here.

"Predecessor" means one who goes or has gone before another in point of time. An ancestor. Choosing your "predecessor" is akin to choosing your father and mother.

How about the fact that Gregg Williams has a clause in his contract which requires a buy-out if someone else is hired?

How about the fact that Al Saunders and Gregg Williams - both guys seen as head coaches in waiting - are already in place for a team that went to the playoffs and could easily move up? Not to mention if Gibbs is a "consultant" he is going to back his coordinators before he backs a former player that he has never coached with.

How about that if Snyder wants to go the big name route (which he is prone to do) he goes for Bill Cowher or Brian Billick?

What about other coordinators who have had better years per their units like Jason Garrett, Jim Schwartz, or Rex Ryan?

Sure he is a candidate. But to say he is signed, sealed, and delivered is pretty stupid at this point.

Me thinks you would rather just peek your head on to this forum to be the Cardinals Doomsday Fortune teller.

Don't know if it is true, but 7 head coaches since he bought the team in 1999.

And I suppose money's gonna stop Dan Snyder right? I mean, after all the guy is notoriously cheap and frugal with his money huh?

How about the fact that Al Saunders and Gregg Williams - both guys seen as head coaches in waiting - are already in place for a team that went to the playoffs and could easily move up? Al Saunders has been a head coach in the waiting for how long now? And how many jobs have come open with him as a candidate for? And how many of those jobs has he landed again?

Also, Grimm was the TE Coach on Gibbs's 92 squad, his last before he retired the first time around.

How about that if Snyder wants to go the big name route (which he is prone to do) he goes for Bill Cowher or Brian Billick?

Cowher left the NFL citing fatigue. This was working for a guy in Rooney who's one of the NFL's most patient and fair owners. He's got a nice job now with CBS. He also has a nice little "retirement" set up in North Carolina, who's NFL team has a coach who may very well be on his last legs in 2008. He's not going to Washington.

Billick might, but Cowher won't.

What about other coordinators who have had better years per their units like Jason Garrett, Jim Schwartz, or Rex Ryan?

Schwartz is a possibility. Garrett stays in Dallas or goes to Atlanta (just a guess) and Ryan catches on as a D-Coordinator somewhere else next year.

Sure he is a candidate. But to say he is signed, sealed, and delivered is pretty stupid at this point.

Uhhh.. I didn't say he was signed, sealed and delivered. Nowhere did I even imply he got the job. I do think he's the most likely to get hired. Sorry if that bugs you.

Me thinks you would rather just peek your head on to this forum to be the Cardinals Doomsday Fortune teller.

No, it's called making a realistic prediction... You know, one of those things called an educated guess?

But you know, you're right.. No chance of him getting the Redskin job. He's gonna coach here until retirement or he gets fired, he's never gonna take a job in the league as a head coach and is going to be perfectly content being Whisenhunt's right hand man for the rest of his life.. There's no possible way he goes to Washington at all, despite all mentioned previously.

Grimm will be the choice. I'm almost certain of that.

Apparently you missed the point of my post. I was saying that Grimm is anything but the "certain" choice. There are a lot of hats in the ring right now and NO WHERE has it been mentioned that Grimm is the front runner. Quite the contrary.

As for your last paragraph - well duh - I understand that coaching the Skins would be Grimms dream job. Of course he would accept that offer.

I'm just saying I am not so certain he is going to get anything but a customary interview.

Don't be surprised if Jon Gruden becomes the HC of the Redskins.

"Gruden, now 51-50 in six seasons in Tampa, has one year remaining on a deal that pays him approximately $4.5 million per season. No coach enters a season with a single, lame-duck year on his deal, meaning Joel and Bryan Glazer, sons of team owner Malcolm Glazer, have a decision to make in the coming weeks. Or sooner." Which implies that if I'm a betting man, I'm placing my money in Grimm getting the job. However, it was nothing more than a hunch based guess.

No question.. If anyone's the front runner, it's Gregg Williams.. However, being he's the front runner hardly means he's a lock for the job.

I'm just saying I am not so certain he is going to get anything but a customary interview.

That's cool. I think he's one of the finalists for the job, but nothing's certain until they hold the Press Conference and he takes the field as the team's Head Coach.

That'd be interesting and is a wrinkle added to the hunt that we haven't yet discussed.

For some reason, I don't think Grimm will be their guy...although, in many ways, he should be. Not sexy enough for Snyder, is the bottom line.

I agree with you on this. He would be an excellent pick but I just don't see Snyder hiring him. But heck I've been wrong before and certainly will be again!!

See, that's fair.. However, here's my take.

Snyder's gone the retread route (Schottenheimer).

He went for the "blast from the past" (Gibbs).

He went for the gusto with a college coach (Spurrier).

I just can't help but think that Snyder might want to take a look at fresh blood so to speak.

As for the number of coaches they've had since Snyder took over, they've had six. If you include the interims, since Snyder took over they've had Turner, Robiske (sic), Schottenheimer, Spurrier and Gibbs.

Some interesting quips from a friend of mine who lives in the DC metro area.

Bram just reported that Gregg Williams does NOT have the $1 million clause in his contract.

Bram said that he asked someone in the staff, and they replied that the people reporting that never asked the right people.

Snyder also said that he would rather hire outside of the orgainization and leave all the coaches the same if at all possible.

Bram is Bram Weinstein, he is a radio host on the Redskins Radio Network and also an employee of the Redskin organization.

Here's a thread from a Redskin message board to back it up.

I agree in many ways Mitch...however there are not too many sexy guys around with a good pro HC pedigree...someone mentioned Gruden...if he could get out of his current deal he might be one. The Mora's of the world sure do not fit the picture...If Holgrem hung it up for a year, he might fit the bill. We will just wait and see. Williams should get it on paper...let's hope he does not want Grimm...although I would love to see Russ get a shot.

Well other than Gregg Williams i would think Grimm is the favorite. And if thats the case you KNOW Snyder will throw a boatload of cash at Faneca.

I hope thats not how the dominos fall - but this is the Cardinals we cheer for after all.
Doubt it. They went and got Pete Kendall right before the firsdt game this year and he payed really well throughout the season. He was the only O-lineman (possibly the only offensive player) to play every week.

dback jay, not bagging on you, just disagreeing.

In my opinion, no coach will ever win big under Dan Snyder and by now most of the good candidates know it. Some guy with big ambitions and a bigger ego will take the job, no doubt.

I don't think it will be Grimm. He's too bright and not desperate enough.

I know Skorp, it's all good my man. The tone wasn't as it was implied to be. I was just meaning to point out that a few coaches have gone on to successful careers and never served as a coordinator of any sorts :).

Might happen, but the Glazers would be idiots to fire Gruden. Gruden to the Dolphins would be a better fit for Jon, but that won't happen.

This statement from Snyder makes me laugh. I don't know if it is an accurate quote or not but...

It's fairly well known that Snyder likes to get the "big name" when selecting a head coach. What "big name" coach is going to want to take the job while being restricted to accept all of the current coaching staff. :doi:

The 'Skins made some progress under Gibbs, now Snyder will again intrude and screw things up!
