After dropping the first two games of their three-game series against the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants entered Sunday looking to avoid a sweep.
Landen Roupp got the start for San Francisco against Kyle Hart. Roupp was coming off a difficult outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, where he allowed four earned runs over 3.2 innings while battling command issues.
The Giants ultimately fell 5-3, with Roupp taking the loss, his 10th of the season.
The Padres struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Jackson Merrill launched a two-run home run to center field. San Diego added to its lead later in the inning as Jake Cronenworth delivered a two-run infield single, giving the Padres an early 4-0 advantage.
San Francisco struggled to generate offense against Hart, and the Giants were held scoreless until the fourth inning. JP Sears entered in relief but quickly ran into trouble. Willy Adames drove in the Giants' first run with an RBI single before Drew Cavanaugh added another RBI later in the inning, trimming the deficit to 4-2.
The Giants carried that momentum into the fifth inning when Osleivis Basabe connected on a solo home run to bring San Francisco within one run. The comeback attempt was short-lived, however, as Luis Campusano answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to restore the Padres' two-run lead at 5-3.
Roupp was lifted after allowing his fifth earned run of the game. Sam Hentges finished the fifth inning without surrendering another run and returned for a scoreless sixth. Dylan Smith followed with a clean seventh inning, keeping the Giants within striking distance.
The rest of the Giants bullpen would seemingly hold strong the rest of the way.
The Giants made things interesting in the eighth inning when Rafael Devers connected on his 23rd home run of the season, cutting the deficit to one run. It would be as close as San Francisco would get, however, as the comeback stalled there. The Giants were held scoreless the rest of the way, allowing the Padres to secure the victory.
The Giants will look to bounce back on Monday when they open a three-game series against the Texas Rangers. Logan Webb is scheduled to start for San Francisco, while Texas has yet to announce its starter.
Monday also marks the MLB Trade Deadline, making Sunday's game a potential final appearance in a Giants uniform for several players who have surfaced in trade speculation, including Robbie Ray.
