Giants predicted to make blockbuster trade for $56M Cy Young winner to pair with Logan Webb originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco Giants are about to begin year one under new manager Tony Vitello, who was coaching at Tennessee this time last year. One of the biggest priorities for the Giants is keeping their pitching rotation healthy, a challenge they struggled with for much of last season.
“It's almost as if the team's pitchers have been cursed in 2025. With every solid outing, another arm goes down, or a key pitcher is out due to injury,” SI’s Ryan Boman wrote.
Giants ace Logan Webb pitched for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and is set to be San Francisco’s Opening Day starter. He addressed critics who claimed their championship game loss meant little.
“I feel like there's a narrative that we didn't care. That's complete bulls**t. I think we probably cared the most out of every team, to be honest with you. We do things in different ways than some of the other teams, but we care a lot,” Webb said.
The Giants are aiming for a strong season, and it starts with their rotation. One way to improve could be trading for Miami Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara.
“The Marlins moved two veteran-ish starters this offseason (Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers) but hung on to Alcantara, who was a prime trade candidate last winter and again at last year's trade deadline. He instead remains in Miami. How long will that last? I don't think it will be too much longer given his $17 million salary this year and $21 million club option next year. Interested teams will give up more to get two postseason of Alcantara rather than one,” CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa wrote.
Adding Alcantara would significantly bolster the Giants’ roster, depending on the cost of the trade. While Alcantara didn’t have a stellar season last year, he is now fully healthy for the first time in a long time.
