Giants expected to sign 12.5-sack former Lions, Texans DT after NFL Draft, per report originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

With the NFL Draft beginning on Thursday, the New York Giants should be prepared to make a splash by adding assets that would help them address their current needs.

Once the draft concludes, the New York Post’s Paul Schwartz recently reported that the franchise will sign a former Detroit Lions and Houston Texans Defensive tackle who has recorded 12.5 sacks in his career.

“The Giants have a huge void in the middle of their defense,” Schwartz wrote Sunday. “They were 31st in the league last season in run defense, and that was with Lawrence starting all 17 games.”

“The defensive tackles on their roster are Darius Alexander, Roy Robertson-Harris, Elijah Chatman, Sam Roberts, and Marlon Tuipulotu. Help is needed. Lots of it. Expect the Giants to sign veteran D.J. Reader, making it official after the draft to protect the compensatory pick formula. Reader visited last week, and pairing him with Lawrence was on the table. Not any longer, of course.”

Reader, who accumulated 28 tackles with the Detroit Lions last season, wouldn’t be a blockbuster signing for the Giants. The Clemson product’s best NFL season came in 2019-20, as he finished the year with 52 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Since then, Reader has been relatively inconsistent, which explains why he’s slated to join his fourth team in 10 years.

That said, the move won’t make the Giants’ defense worse by any stretch of the imagination, making it reasonable at this stage of the offseason.
