Giants cut ties with 3.76 ERA pitcher in surprise roster move before Opening Day originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco Giants were facing a roster crunch, and it meant they had to make a tough move before Opening Day arrived.
They made their final decision on Sunday, informing Joey Lucchesi that he's not making the roster and subsequently granting him his release, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
This will make Lucchesi a free agent and free to sign with any team.
Lucchesi was once a promising prospect for the San Diego Padres, but his career has been a bit winding since then.
The 2025 season was the 6-foot-5 lefty's first year with the Giants, and he was really solid. In 38 games, Lucchesi had a 3.76 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 38.1 innings.
One problem with Lucchesi going forward, though, is injury history.
He pitched three games in MLB in 2020, 11 in 2021, missed all of 2022, threw nine MLB games in 2023 and then just two in 2024.

Lucchesi does seem healthy at the moment, finding solid velocity throughout the spring and showing that last season probably wasn't a fluke.
Given that teams always will go after available left-handed pitching, Lucchesi shouldn't have too tough a time landing a new gig.
It just won't be with the Giants, who instead signed Ryan Borucki to hold down a bullpen role instead.
