One of the NFL’s rising stars is New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo. The former Arizona State standout has not only taken the league by storm on the field, but his larger-than-life personality has also made him a fan favorite off it. However, a season-ending ankle injury cut his impressive rookie campaign short. Even so, his new head coach, John Harbaugh, recently offered a strong endorsement of his running back’s recovery.
According to an ESPN report by Jordan Raanan, Skattebo is expected to return as a full participant for training camp. That update comes after speculation that he would not be ready for Week 1, a claim Skattebo disputed. Harbaugh called the second-year back a top-tier talent, reflecting his confidence in Skattebo’s recovery.

“It seems to me he was that kind of guy at Arizona State and the exact same guy that I saw on tape last year,” Harbaugh said. “You guys know better. You watched him up close and personal. He’s a top tier back, and he’s planning on playing that way this year.”

Skattebo not only plans to play at that level, but Harbaugh clearly expects him to. The second-year back has impressed throughout his recovery and appears poised to pick up where he left off. He will be a critical piece of the Giants’ young offensive core.
That offense features quarterback Jaxson Dart, Skattebo, wide receiver Malik Nabers, and free-agent addition Isaiah Likely. Harbaugh has built a strong reputation for assembling coaching staffs that produce efficient offenses. In 2008, he led the Baltimore Ravens to the AFC Championship Game with rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.

Four years later, Flacco, Harbaugh, and the Ravens won the Super Bowl. Harbaugh has also overseen several standout running backs during his tenure in Baltimore. Most recently, Derrick Henry revitalized his career with the Ravens, rushing for 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns over two seasons.

John Harbaugh was one kick away from remaining the Ravens’ head coach. Instead, fate brought him to the Giants, where he inherits a promising roster loaded with young talent.
If Harbaugh can help players like Skattebo reach their full potential, he could be the coach who brings sustained success back to New York.
