San Francisco Giants first-year manager Tony Vitello was ejected after arguing a call in the bottom of the 7th inning en route to a 5-4 loss against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, July 22.

Vitello disagreed with umpire Mike Estabrook's call at second base that ruled Vinnie Pasquantino safe, with Giants' shortstop Willy Adames believing he tagged him when he was off base.

Estabrook lamented that Adames pushed Pasquantino off the bag, but Adames maintained his stance that he made a firm tag as Pasquantino was losing his balance. He stood ground that the play should have been reviewable, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser.

Vitello was visibly upset at the call. Giants broadcasters and announcers on NBC Sports Bay Area said it was "one of the worst ones I've seen in a long time."

Vitello had a colorful exchange with the game's official and then was booted from the contest. It was Vitello's third ejection of the season and of his MLB managing career.

San Francisco was up 3-0 at the time of the ejection. The delay in play sparked momentum for the Royals, who would put up five runs to end the inning starting with a two-run home run courtesy of Salvador Perez at the next at-bat.

It started a sequence that had the Royals ahead, 5-3, going into the 8th inning. Casey Schmitt got the Giants closer to striking distance in the 9th inning with a solo home run to left field but that would be the final run as San Francisco lost the game, 5-4.

They were swept in the series against Kansas City, falling to a 42-60 record on the season.
