From 2008 through 2025, John Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens faced off against Mike Tomlin's Pittsburgh Steelers 44 times. Tomlin won 23 of the 40 regular-season meetings, while the two split the four postseason matches.

This week will mark the first time since 2006 that Tomlin is not in attendance at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ended his 19-year stretch as the Steelers' head coach earlier this year when the two parties decided to part ways. At the time, he was the most-tenured head coach in American team sports.

While Tomlin has yet to decide on the next steps of his career, Harbaugh has quickly moved on. As the new head coach of the New York Giants, he is front and center at the Combine, representing his new team with a vigor and energy that has become his brand.

In his media session on Tuesday, Harbaugh was subject to a variety of questions about his new gig, but some took time to have him reflect on his time in Baltimore. At one point, Tomlin's name came up. Harbaugh has nothing but praise for his former adversary.

"I got to be across from Mike Tomlin for 18 years in some heated battles... I admire that very much."

“Nothing but respect and admiration for what he’s done. I feel honored to be a part of that,” Harbaugh told Jeff Hathhorn of 93.7 The Fan about the time coaching against Mike Tomlin.

“The thing about Mike that makes him such a great coach is [that] you knew what to expect from his teams,” Harbaugh went on to say. “The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t the Pittsburgh Steelers because they’re in Pittsburgh, or they wear black and gold, or have a nickname that’s tough, and ‘steely,’ you know, or because of anything other than the personality of the people running the program.”

The Ravens-Steelers rivalry will embark on a new era in 2026. Baltimore will now be headed by first-time head coach Jesse Minter, who was Jim Harbaugh's defensive coordinator at Michigan and, more recently, with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Steelers are taking a different approach, hiring long-time NFL head coaching veteran Mike McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native.
