New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole put together a strong performance on Saturday against one of the best teams in the National League.
Cole tossed seven innings against the Atlanta Braves, allowing just two runs, zero walks and nine strikeouts. When he exited the game, New York held a comfortable two-run cushion and a win would give them the series victory.
Cole’s performance was especially meaningful beyond just the result. He passed the 1,000 strikeout threshold as a member of the Yankees, becoming just the 13th pitcher in franchise history to do so. That is not where it ends though.
He actually became the fastest pitcher on that list of 13 to accomplish the feat, doing so in just 139 games, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.
Cole is currently in his seventh season of his nine-year, $324 million deal signed back in 2019 and has been exactly as advertised throughout his tenure.
He has earned three All-Star selections, an American League Cy Young Award and has received AL MVP votes as well. However, the one accomplishment he has not yet brought home is a World Series title, and he is hoping to change that this year.
After Saturday’s start, Cole remains as effective as ever despite missing the entire 2025 season after undergoing right elbow surgery.
Across 80 2/3 innings this year he has collected 87 strikeouts and owns a 3.35 ERA, and if he keeps pitching at this level, the Yankees will have every reason to believe their ace can deliver in October when it matters most.
