Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has renewed his Borussia Dortmund contract by four years until 2031, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.
Schlotterbeck, 26, is a key player in Dortmund and the news came after months of speculation and a recent dismissal from the player that an agreement was imminent.
“The contract extension with Nico Schlotterbeck is of enormous importance. He is a great asset to us, both as a player and as a person," Dortmund board spokesman Carsten Cramer said.
"And Nico, for his part, knows exactly what he has in our club. He is highly valued and can sense that we are currently building something here.”
Schlotterbeck said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have extended my contract with BVB. I deliberately took my time with this decision because it’s an important one for me. We had good discussions throughout, but even so, it wasn’t a process that was wrapped up after just a week or two.
"The club officials have laid out a solid plan for me, and I know what I have in this club. My goal is to win titles together with Borussia Dortmund.”
Schlotterbeck's original contract was until 2027 amid alleged interest from clubs including Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Kicker sports magazine said that the renewal is said to include in a release clause of €50-60 million ($58.4-70 million) which could be even be activated this summer for a small number of clubs.
This could allow Schlotterbeck to attract a top club with good performances at the World Cup in summer.
Schlotterbeck came to Dortmund in 2022 from Freiburg and has played 155 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing 18 assists. He has 25 Germany caps.
