The number of German television viewers who witnessed their national men's team's early World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay was lower than during Germany's previous three matches due to its late start, according to figures released on Tuesday.

An average of 17.57 million people were watching live when Germany lost 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay on Monday after a dour 1-1 draw in the last 32, according to the AFG Videoforschung market research institute.

The match broadcast by public broadcaster ZDF achieved a market share of 74.5%, AFG figures showed.

While it was the least watched of Germany's four World Cup matches, the numbers are still respectable given that kick-off against Paraguay was at 22:30 pm (2030 GMT) German time on a Monday night.

Viewership numbers peaked during Germany's group stage match against Curaçao, which achieved the best numbers due to an earlier start.

Some 23.43 millions were watching as Germany beat Curaçao 7-1, a match that started at 7 pm German time on Sunday, June 14.
