German luger Julia Taubitz sped to victory in the singles on Tuesday to finally taste Olympic gold after eight world titles in various disciplines.
She continues the strong German tradition in luge after the retired Natalie Geisenberger won the gold in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
Taubitz was seventh at Beijing 2022 but triumphed in style in Cortina with a time of 3 minutes 30.625 seconds from the four runs. She had taken over at the top of the standings after a track record on run 2 and never looked back.
Latvia's Elina Bota took silver and US luger Ashley Farquharson was third.
Taubitz's compatriot and Olympic debutant Merle Fräbel missed a medal in eighth despite leading after the first run, with a big mistake at the start on the third run costing her dearly. German Anna Berreiter, silver medallist in 2022, was sixth.
