Brent Key didn’t wait long to fill the void left by one of Georgia Tech’s fastest playmakers.
On Tuesday morning, the Yellow Jackets landed a commitment from Bowling Green transfer wide receiver Rahkeem Smith, as reported by Pete Nakos of on3 sports. Smith, a speedy, 5-foot-9 target who brings a much-needed spark to Tech’s offense and special teams. Smith’s decision comes at a pivotal time, as the program aims to inject more explosiveness into its vertical passing game following the departure of Eric Singleton Jr. to Auburn.
Smith, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, posted 25 catches for 349 yards and three touchdowns last season at Bowling Green, averaging an impressive 14 yards per grab. His ability to stretch the field will be crucial for Georgia Tech, which ranked just 92nd nationally in passing yards per game in 2024 (198.7).
But it’s not just offense where Smith could shine.
Standing at 175 pounds with elite short-area quickness, Smith is expected to immediately compete for a role in the return game—a unit Georgia Tech has consistently leaned on for momentum shifts. His versatility adds to a revamped receiver corps that includes fellow transfer Eric Rivers (FIU), South Carolina product Debron Gatling, and returner Malik Rutherford.
“Done a good job with it,” Key said this spring when asked about the vertical passing game. “We’ve got some guys… once he’s [Rivers] out there and we get some other pieces in there, I think we have a chance to really improve that part of the offense.”
Smith is exactly the kind of “piece” Key was hinting at.
His arrival continues a calculated rebuild of Georgia Tech’s skill positions, where speed and separation have become top priorities. With Smith’s signing, the Jackets not only replace lost production but potentially upgrade it—with a player who can make an impact the moment he touches the field.
Tech fans, circle his name now—Rahkeem Smith might just be the game-breaker Georgia Tech’s been missing.
