STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Georgia Southern football team accepted an invitation to play in the Birmingham Bowl game.
The Eagles will face off with Appalachian State on Monday, Dec. 29, and 2 p.m. in a rematch of the regular season.
The two teams matched up in the regular season, and the Eagles defeated Appalachian State 25-23 on Nov. 6.
Georgia Southern finished the season 6-6 overall. They finished the season winning three of their last four games.
The Eagles needed a win in the last game of the season against Marshall to earn their fourth straight bowl appearance under head coach Clay Helton.
Georgia Southern has not won a postseason game under Helton. In 2022, they fell to Buffalo, 23-21, in the Camellia Bowl. In 2023, they lost to Ohio University, 41-21, in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Last season, they lost to Sam Houston, 31-26, in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
