Georges St-Pierre finds it hard to bet against UFC champion Jon Jones, but knows father time exists.
Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) is expected to unify his heavyweight title with interim champ Tom Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) this year, but an announcement is yet to be made.
Many view Aspinall as perhaps Jones' biggest threat, and the former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion thinks it'll come down to how motivated Jones is.
"I mean, you talk about legacy, Jon Jones is probably the best fighter that ever lived," St-Pierre told Bloody Elbow. "If I have to choose someone in his prime that I put in the Coliseum, hand-to-hand, I think it would be Jon Jones. It's hard to deny that. However, nobody beats time and Tom Aspinall is on a hell of a run so, it's to see how they're going to match."
Jones has been vocal about his reluctancy to face Aspinall in the past, arguing that he would have nothing to gain by beating another hot name. He opted to make his first title defense against the consensus greatest heavyweight of all time Stipe Miocic, finishing him by Round 3 TKO UFC 309 this past November. Four months prior, Aspinall defended his interim title with a first-round TKO of Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304.
If the fight does materialize, St-Pierre hopes Jones gets the pay he deserves.
"It's hard to say. As a fan, I want to see this fight," St-Pierre said. "I would really like to see this fight, but I think Tom is very hungry, and it's up to Jon to see if he still wants to do this, and if the UFC can compensate him good – because I think he deserves it. So it's going to be a hell of a fight."
