According to Chael Sonnen, Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is official.
Interim heavyweight champion Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) has waited for more than a year to unify his belt with heavyweight champ Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) but is yet to get his wish. Aspinall had to defend his interim title with a TKO of Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 last July. Four months later, Jones successfully made his first title defense by finishing Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November.
Despite the lag, UFC CEO Dana White has remained hopeful that the title-unification bout happens. Sonnen claims that it's finally a done deal.
"I am confident enough to tell you that that fight is done, though. That fight is agreed all the way down to the date," Sonnen said on "Good Guy/Bad Guy" with Daniel Cormier. "That, I do have the confidence to tell you. International Fight Week would make perfect sense. I personally, just in my heart, I always thought they were going to go back to New York."
There was a recent uproar after a recent report indicated that Jones would need six months from signing before he'd fight Aspinall. Sonnen dismissed the notion that Jones ever made such a request.
"I'm telling you, this Jon Jones business, Jones will say a lot of things to the media," Sonnen said. "When he gets that phone call, 'Here's the guy you're fighting, do you understand?' Yes, and that is what he will say. All the other reports are not true. Jon has come out, he's been a troll, he's had some fun, he even tried to negotiate the media. ... Jon Jones has not ducked this fight. I wish he did. I'd love to bury him. He didn't. He did not duck Tom Aspinall."
