One of the best things the Tennessee Titans did during the offseason was to hire Robert Saleh as head coach. He's had one run as a head coach so far, and it was with the New York Jets. Like every coach of the Jets since Rex Ryan was fired, Saleh was unsuccessful. The only coach to keep that team above water was Todd Bowles in his first season, the year after Ryan left.
So, let's not hold that situation against the Titans' new head coach because it's clear that the Jets' problems go far beyond the head coach. After the Jets, Saleh spent a year as a consultant for the Green Bay Packers before returning to the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator.
Usually, the players on a coach's side of the ball support their coach and want to play well for them. It's less often that you hear a player on the opposite side of the ball have high praise for the same coach. Which is why George Kittle's high praise of Saleh should perk up your ears and get you paying attention.
"I talked to Saleh more in this year than I did in the four years I was with him," Kittle says. "I'm talking, like, twice a week I would just go sit in his office anywhere from five to 30 minutes, and we would just talk. He's a big conspiracy theory guy, I'll say that, loves conspiracies."

"This is me giving Robert Saleh a smelling salt. So he's one of the boys for sure. He knows how to inspire. He has great, great messaging. He's part of the invention of that defense that he coaches. I mean, our defense was mauled by injuries. He was part of us winning 13 games. Just give him some time, and I think he's going to really put some good games out there."
That's pretty high praise coming from a player who didn't directly play for Saleh. It means he's the kind of coach who can reach players regardless of position.
Kittle goes on to talk about his first couple of seasons in the NFL under Kyle Shanahan. Those seasons weren't great, but look at where the 49ers are now, actively competing in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. "So just give him a couple of years because becoming a good team in the NFL is incredibly difficult, unless you already have a stacked roster. So just give him a couple of years; he's gonna turn it around, he's gonna drive the bus in the right direction."
The veteran tight end's faith in what Saleh is capable of should have everyone paying attention. Saleh also learned from his time with the Jets and has already put some of those lessons into play. It won't be a fast turnaround, but the Titans will be better than advertised before we know it.
