Geno Auriemma was not pleased with the officiating in the Final Four game between UConn and South Carolina.
The No. 1 seed Gamecocks (35-3) led 44-39 at the end of the third quarter over the No. 1 seed Huskies (38-0) at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix on April 3.
In his sideline interview with ESPN's Holly Rowe at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Auriemma criticized the officiating that saw his Huskies called for six fouls in the third quarter and none against South Carolina.
"They've been beating the (expletive) out of our guys down there the entire game," Auriemma said. "... This is ridiculous. ... Come on man, this is for the national championship."
Auriemma's complaint also included a claim that South Carolina coach Dawn Staley had had been speaking to officials in an inappropriate fashion while trying to advocate for her team.
"They're coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referees some names you don't want to hear and now we get 6-0 (on foul calls) and I've got a kid with a ripped jersey, and (the officials) go, 'I didn't see it.'"
Auriemma's rant was sparked by the final play of the quarter that saw UConn forward Sarah Strong miss a shot at the buzzer while taking contact from a defender. After the play, Strong looked down at her jersey and ripped the top of it. It wasn't clear if the jersey was already ripped before Strong ripped it further.
Before the start of the fourth quarter, Strong had to change out of her ripped No. 21 jersey and into a No. 55 jersey for the remainder of the game.
At the time of Auriemma's interview, the Gamecocks had been whistled for three fouls to UConn's 10 and shot 14 free throws to the Huskies' two.
