After leading Penn State in a blowout victory over Ohio State with a record-performance on Friday night, star freshman Gavin McKenna had one more notable highlight this weekend for the Nittany Lions. McKenna's overtime goal lifted Penn State to a thrilling 5-4 victory as Penn State overcame a three-goal deficit to complete the weekend sweep at home in the Pegula Ice Arena.
McKenna was essentially in a 1-on-3 situation as Penn State kept the puck in the Ohio State zone, but his masterful ability to move the puck allowed him the opportunity to get a shot on goal. McKenna found just the right angle to get the puck in the net for the win.
Asked about the goal after the game, McKenna explained he saw the one-on-one opportunity and liked his chances. It is good that he believed in his matchup on the ice in that situation.
It was a rocky first half of the game for Penn State. Ohio State struck first and built a 4-1 in the second period, thanks in part to a shorthanded goal. But that left plenty of time for Penn State to battle back. JJ Wiebusch cut the deficit to two goals in the second period, and he scored the first of two Penn State goals in a 37-second span in the third period to bring the Nittany Lions within one. Jared Crespo tied the game at 4-4 early on in the third period.
The win by Penn State clinches a first-round matchup in the Big Ten men's hockey tournament to be played at home for Penn State. The Nittany Lions sit firmly in the No. 3 seed after the weekend sweep of the Buckeyes. No matter what happens for the rest of the regular season, Penn State will finish no lower than the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament, which comes with a home series in the first round.
Next up for Penn State will be one final road series next weekend. Penn State visits Notre Dame, which has been having a difficult season and is sitting at the bottom of the Big Ten standings.

"When you have the opportunity to take a guy 1-on-1 in overtime, you know, I think I like my chances of that." ️
