Police have charged Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna with a first-degree felony for an alleged incident on the day of his team's monumental game in Beaver Stadium.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Jan. 31, hours after the Nittany Lions and No. 2 Michigan State played the program's first-ever ice hockey game in Beaver Stadium, according to a report from StateCollege.com.

McKenna scored a goal and had two assists in the 5-4 overtime loss in front of more than 75,000 fans − the second-largest attendance at a hockey game in NCAA history.

McKenna was charged by State College police on Wednesday, Feb. 4 with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct (engage in fighting), according to the charging document.

A Penn State spokesperson said university officials "are aware that charges have been filed, however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment."

No affidavit of probable cause for the incident had been filed as of 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

McKenna, an 18-year-old freshman, was the top Canadian Hockey League player last year and is regarded as, perhaps, the top hockey prospect, for his age, in the world. He's a contender to be the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NHL Draft.

This season, McKenna has produced 11 goals and a team-leading 21 assists in 24 games for the No. 5 Nittany Lions.

McKenna (6-foot, 170 pounds) was the third-youngest player to win the top CHL award, behind only legendary Sidney Crosby and NHL all-star John Tavares. McKenna accomplished that with a stunning season of production and creativity for the Medicine Hat Tigers, highlighted by a 54-game scoring streak, the CHL's longest in 25 years.

McKenna has talked about bypassing another year in the CHL in order to develop against the bigger, older players in NCAA hockey. In picking PSU over hockey stalwart Michigan State and others, McKenna reportedly received and "extremely generous six-figure offer" that may be the richest regarding NIL and revenue sharing in hockey, according to ESPN.

He expects to play just one season in college.
