Rutgers women’s basketball coach Gary Redus II signed a five-year deal through the 2030-31 season that will be worth a total of $4 million in salary, according to a contract obtained by NJ.com on Tuesday afternoon via an open public records request.
Redus’ initial base salary is $750,000 this upcoming season and will raise by $25,000 every year.
It marks a significant raise from his base salary at LSU, which was $305,000 this past season, but a decrease from his predecessor. Coquese Washington, who was fired following her fourth season with the program, was set to earn $825,000 next season.
Redus was officially introduced as the fourth full-time head coach of the storied Rutgers women’s basketball program on Tuesday afternoon.

Rutgers Athletic Director Keli Zinn and the Scarlet Knights host a news conference to introduce Gary Redus II as the new women’s basketball head coach, Tuesday, March 17, 2026 in Piscataway, N.J.
Here are more details of his deal:
Coaching pool: Redus will be granted a minimum pool of $850,000 for assistant coaching salaries, along with a minimum pool of $275,000 for other support staff.
“Head Coach shall determine in consultation with the Director, and subject to the approval of the Director and all applicable University policies and procedures, the allocation of annual salaries of the individual coaches,” per the contract. “Nothing herein requires that the entire pool be expended if Head Coach determines in consultation with the Director that expending the full pool is not necessary to recruit and retain the desired assistant coaching staff.”
Buyout by coach: If Redus terminated his contract for another position prior to its final day of April 30, 2031, he would owe 25% of the total salary compensation remaining on the deal.
For example, if he elected to leave the program following two seasons, he would owe Rutgers $618,725 — a quarter of the $2.475 million remaining on his deal.
Buyout by school: If Redus is terminated before the completion of his contract, Rutgers would owe him 90% of his remaining salary, which would be subject to offset if/when he gets a new job.
Incentive structure:
Individual incentives include National Coach of the Year ($20,000) and Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year ($10,000).
Team incentives, which are cumulative, include:
Big Ten Conference Tournament Champion: $25,000.
Big Ten Regular Season Champion: $25,000.
NCAA Tournament Appearance: $25,000.
NCAA Round of 32 Appearance: $25,000.
NCAA Sweet 16 Appearance: $25,000.
NCAA Elite 8 Appearance: $50,000.
NCAA Final Four Appearance: $75,000.
NCAA National Championship: $100,000.
Redus would also receive $5,000 in bonuses if his team’s GPA is 3.0 or higher and if its multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) is at or above 950.
