Not official yet. The team needs to bring in a black guy (Stevie McNair?) to interview before they can publicly announce it, but that's the word on the street up here.

dumbest rule ever...if an owner is racist, have him bought out, there are enough black coaches in the league now that you can end the stupid you must interview someone black rule.

Dungy, Tomlin, Smith, Edwards, Crennell, Lewis... Who else? 6 coaches in a 32 team league is "enough"? Especially when three of those guys came out under the same "coaching tree" (they're all from Tampa and the three all worked under Dungy). Two more black coaches got shuffled out last season in Green and Shell.

I agree that the rule needs to be tweaked, especially when we're talking about first-time HCs, but I don't have a problem with owners and GMs having to give a minority candidate even a token interview (Marvin Lewis got three or four of those before he got the Bengals' job), because it improves their chances the next time around.

I'm all for diversity in the NFL coaching ranks, but I don't know if forcibly divesting owners is really the answer.

I would not be surprised to see Wade Phillips dumped and Garrett made the HC in Dallas.

So because only 6 guys are HC's right now it is a problem? Dennis Green is a garbage coach, thats why he is no longer a coach. Art shell also. I dont give a crap if your black white or green, all that matters is your skills. If owners arent looking at ti that way, buy out those owners. You should not forse everyone to interview a certain race, what about asians and mexicans? not a single HC in those races? maybe we should have each team hire a PC panel of every race to decide who coaches teams.

If anything, if I got offered a BS token interview id tell em to shove it.

Well, we're not going to see eye-to-eye on this, obviously. But I think it's worth saying that the Rooney Rule requires only a "minority interview." Thus, they could interview Norm Chow or Ron Rivera and easily clear the minority interview bar. And why shouldn't those guys get an interview? Or Mike Singletary? Even if they don't get the job, isn't the experience of going through the process (again, as Marvin Lewis did multiple times before getting the job) worth the slight amount of extra time?

The NFL isn't forcing any owner to interview a single race. They're only asking owners to look at a minority candidate. One minority candidate. The rule was put in place four or five years ago because qualified HC candidates were being overlooked and teams were going back to the retread well. One reason that I'm conflicted on this season is because it seems like a lot of new blood is coming in.

OT - I wonder if Parcells with try and sell the NFL that because Sparano is (apparently) Italian that he qualifies as a minority interview.

why do those guys deserve an interview?!

what has norm chow done to deserve an NFL head coaching gig? Rivera has been interviewed before and wasn't hired for a reason. Singletary is still being groomed and has refused to interview of college positions as he wants to be in the NFL.

There are a lot of coaches out there. None of them are entitled to anything.

So what if a team interviews denny green, and hires him and doesnt interview a white guy? I understand the rule and why it was put in place but now that there is obviously no white vs black coaching bias I dont believe it is neccessary.

Isn't Singletary the front runner in Atlanta? Caldwell may be the man in Indy if Dungy steps away. I think the rule has run it's course. I think the new owners wil hire the guy they think is best regardless of race. The thinking behind the rule was sound but i don't think race plays a part like it used to. However,i believe will stay in place bceause of the threat of a lawsuit by that lawyer, Gilbert????, that was threatened a few years back. I think the guy teamed up with Jesse and caused a stir which led to the rule.

I am so sick of the race card.

What's next? I don't think there is a single Mexican head coach in the NFL. How would you like to be an owner of the team and , after talking to say Pete Carroll he agrees to be your head coach. So as that owner I now have to interview a minority person, just for the sake of interviewing him?
I would be insulted if I were that minority person for wasting my time even if all expenses were paid.

If there is an owner out there that limits his choices to just white applicants , HE is the one getting short changed for having tunnel vision.

What is the percentage of black players to white players? Maybe there is a reverse discrimination story we could start.

Miami interviewed Leslie Frazier of the Vikings, satisfying the Rooney rule

But the rumor is that they offered him the job before they interviewed Frazier. Thats what happened the last time a team got caught trying to go around the Rooney rule. They got caught doing a token interview after they already picked a new HC.

ESPN reported just now that Garrett has not yet accepted a Raven's offer and will interview with Atlanta tomorrow.

If that is a Mortenson-origin report, chances are it is wrong.

Well, less than 25% of America's population is black. I'd say ATM it is a pretty good representation. I'm not stating either way my position on the Rooney rule.

I think you might have something there. I certainly would not be comfortable being Wade Phillips after Jerry says he will match any offer made to Garret. That scenario really stinks for him. He did a fine job all year BUT "what have you done for me this past hour" is the name of the game there. I took a real hard look at Jones on the sideline after the game was over...not too happy.

If you were KW I don't think you would care to have one of the killer B's standing next to you during the last two minutes of the game...no?

Man, those are 2 bad jobs. Garrett might do well to hang around Dallas and wait for Phillips to get the boot next year. He really is lacking in experience.

Baltimore is a no offense, aging defense team. Atlanta is just one big cluster****, with a dysfunctional owner. The better potential jobs would be next year in Seattle and Dallas. I don't know how much longer the Bengals put up with Lewis.

Most of the time..virtually all of the time a job opens up because a team is going south. I feel the Atlanta gig might turn out and is correctable sooner than the Raven spot.

One learns if they can make lemonade out of lemons. In the long run if Garret is worth his salt, one of those gigs might make him an even better coach.

Aside from getting a lifetime supply of tools, bug spray etc from Arthur Blank, he has the deepest, or close to it, pockets in the league.

Atlanta has SOME talent. I don't think that is a hopeless cause by any means. It looks like their GM is from New England, which can't be all bad. The Patriot franchise has had some success of late.

Baltimore is aging and they have lost some significant talent over the last couple of years. I'd tread softly on that job if I were Garrett.

Totally agree with you. An excellent perception of reality.
