The majority of teams in the South Plains are open this week, but there's still matchups with plenty on the line. Here's a look at the best high school football games in the Lubbock area in Week 6.
7 p.m. Friday, Lowrey Field
This longtime rivalry always has meaning, and there's added incentive this year. One thing is certain: A team is picking up its first district win Friday.
Both opened District 2-5A Division I play last week with losses to Amarillo ISD schools. Coronado hung tough before a 65-28 loss to Tascosa, while Monterey never led in a 37-21 loss to Amarillo High.
In many ways, that was the most positive result the Mustangs have had. Coronado, which didn't score in the second half Friday, put up its most points of the season against the Rebels. It helped having quarterback J.J. Villalobos back from injury.
Lubbock-area power rankings: There's a new No. 1 entering Week 6
The Plainsmen have shown flashes but haven't put together consecutive wins. Their 21 points against the Golden Sandstorm were the lowest output this year.
When things are clicking, Monterey's shown balance on offense. Receivers Cam Taylor and Quarren Boyd have complemented running backs Legin Williams and Deuce Moore.
It's too early for either team to hit the panic button, but starting 0-2 will make quite the hill to climb for a playoff spot. This may as well be an elimination game.
7 p.m. Friday, J.M. King Memorial Stadium
Last week: Liberty 56, Fort Stockton 0; Greenwood 47, Pecos 3
This could be Thanksgiving week playoff preview if things break a certain way.
7 p.m. Friday, Wildcat Stadium
Last week: Coahoma 35, Wink 14; Littlefield 42, Brownfield 21
Any time there's a matchup between undefeated teams this far into the season, it's must-see.
7 p.m. Friday, Taylor/Reddell Field
Last week: Wall 35, Sweetwater 0; Idalou 45, Shallowater 20
Idalou has gotten the wheels back on after an 0-2 start, but this is its biggest test to date.
7 p.m. Friday, Todd Field
Last week: Canadian 69, Sunray 20; Idalou 45, Shallowater 20
The Mustangs are reeling, but they can ease any panic with a win here.
7 p.m. Friday, Eagle Field
Last week: Lamesa 42, Tulia 7; Roosevelt 35, Sundown 20
This is a matchup of teams looking to string together some positive momentum.
