FSU baseball ace Wes Mendes has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Year, the conference announced on Monday. He is the third FSU pitcher to win the award, joining Parker Messick and Bryan Henry.
Mendes has a 2.68 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 84 innings pitched. He has made 14 starts for the Seminoles, pitching at least 5.0 innings in all of them and throwing two complete games. He has held opponents to a .201 batting average with 109 strikeouts, the second most in the ACC and 12th nationally.
The junior lefty has allowed 61 hits and walked 23 batters this season, giving up 11 doubles, one triple, and four home runs. He was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week twice, the first coming on March 30 and the second on April 4.
Mendes was also named to the All-ACC First Team, which the league's 16 head coaches vote on. He was the only FSU player to make the first or second All-ACC Teams. He served as FSU's No. 3 starter last season and emerged as one of the top pitchers in the country this season, improving in every category.
He helped Florida State earn the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament this week. The Seminoles will play on Friday at 7 p.m. ET in the quarterfinals, earning a double-bye.
