Taylor Fritz has promised more eye-catching entrances during the second week of Wimbledon after he marked a mixed fourth of July for the United States with a four-set win over Lorenzo Sonego.

After hopefuls Tommy Paul, Jenson Brooksby and Michael Zheng exited the day before the public holiday, America’s 250th anniversary was marked by further blows with Serena Williams ruled out of women’s doubles action before more male players crashed out of the Championships.

Fritz made sure not to add any more woe to celebrations across the pond with a gritty 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Sonego on a boisterous Court Two to make the last 16 at the All England Club for the fourth time in five years.

Another string to Fritz’s bow in England in 2026 has been his emergence as a ‘fashionista’ after sponsor Hugo Boss produced a custom-made white suit for him to wear on to the grass before his tear-away trousers are ripped off in an eye-catching manner.

Quizzed on his new trademark arrival, Fritz smiled: “I mean, I am a little superstitious, so I don’t like to change a winning routine.

“I am really happy with my level, especially in the match today. I really found my serving rhythm.

“That felt great and I am feeling good about my game.”

Fritz had been on course for an all-American fourth round tie, but Frances Tiafoe collapsed to a five-set loss to 10th seed Alexander Bublik.

Tiafoe won the first set of the evening match on Court One and then fashioned nine set points during set three only for Bublik to go clutch on serve in an eventful tie-break.

A 48th ace for Bublik clinched victory to set up a meeting with Fritz with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (13-11), 4-6 success and consign Tiafoe to a forgettable fourth of July.

Second seed Alexander Zverev equalled his best run at Wimbledon and dumped out American Marcos Giron in the process with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 triumph on Court One.

This is the fourth time Zverev has made the last 16, but fresh from a maiden grand slam victory at Roland Garros last month, the German is hungry for more.

Zverev said: “I’m through to the fourth round. I want to keep going. I want to play a lot more great matches out here on Court One or wherever it is going to be.

“I hope to continue doing that. Of course winning in Paris, coming here with a title, I think it helps.”

Alex De Minaur chalked up a third straight triumph on Court Three after he got the better of American Zachary Svajda in four sets.

Ninth seed and French Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli dug deep to bounce back from a first-set bagel to register a four-hour win over Karen Khachanov.

Khachanov moved two sets to one up midway through an entertaining last-32 tie, but Cobolli joined Italian compatriot Jannik Sinner in the fourth round with a 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2 triumph.

Jiri Lehecka, the 13th seed, beat Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at the start of day six.
