⚾Game of the Day

A rivalry game to keep a season going went exactly as these types of games tend to do.

The North Kingstown baseball team erased a one-run deficit thanks to a rally in the top of the sixth, eliminating rival South Kingstown with a 3-2 win at Old Mountain Field.

Ethan Schmitt and Jason Pelletier both scored on an infield error to overcome a 2-1 deficit, and Jack Whitney picked up the victory in relief thanks to five scoreless frames. The sophomore righthander scattered four hits and struck out four after entering in the bottom of the third, recording a 6-4-3 double play to escape a jam and building momentum from there.

North Kingstown suffered a 10-3 defeat against South Kingstown here to open Pod 1 play and was on the way to the same result before the sixth. Bodie Forsell reached on an infield single, Schmitt was hit by a pitch and Pelletier lined a single to right to load the bases with one out. Rory Plaziak grounded into a 5-2 force at the plate, but the Rebels couldn’t complete the double play on the throw to first and the Skippers plated a pair of critical runs.

Whitney suddenly had the lead and retired six of the final seven men he faced, allowing only a two-out single by Mike DiGioia in the bottom of the seventh. South Kingstown never added on after Brayden Rosen scored on an error in the first and DiGioia crossed the plate on a Jack Noonan sacrifice fly in the third.

Schmitt scored two runs, Rocco Conseglia drew two walks and Nick Martucci recorded the lone RBI for North Kingstown (15-8). The Skippers will visit Bishop Hendricken in the Pod 1 title round Sunday and need a pair of victories to reach the state title series. Rosen and Nick Vellone each had two hits for the Rebels, who close their season at 14-9.

La Salle 2, Smithfield 0

Ryan Amaral and Cameron Caprio combined on a three-hit shutout and used single runs in the second and third innings to keep the Rams alive with a 2-0 victory over the Sentinels.

Amaral struck out six against just two walks while covering the first six frames and picking up the win. Caprio came on to nail it down in the seventh and worked around a two-out double to pick up the save. La Salle bounced back a day after a defeat to rival East Providence and will face the Townies in the Pod 2 title round Sunday.

Amaral faced just one batter over the minimum through his first five innings and wriggled out of his only real jam in the sixth. A pair of walks brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but Amaral recorded a harmless fly to right to escape. Caprio struck out the first two men he faced, and a caught stealing ended the game.

David Cavalloro, Cam Slack and Thomas Welsh all singled in the second before a bases-loaded walk by Adryan Urena made it 1-0. The Rams struck again in the third when Brady Collins led off with a double to right, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Axel da Silva. La Salle didn’t manage much more against Smithfield left-hander Domenic Lombardi, who scattered eight hits and struck out five over six innings.

Jacob Sylvester reached safely twice with a single and a walk for the Sentinels, who close their season at 14-11.

Cavalloro, Slack and Collins all collected two hits for the Rams, who improve to 16-8 and will be looking to even the score after a 9-4 loss against East Providence dropped them to the loser’s bracket.

Classical 4, Hope 3

A surprise run by the 12th-seeded Blue Wave in Pod 1 finally ended against a city rival, as the fourth-seeded Purple scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a victory in an elimination game at Mount Pleasant.

Sebastian Betances plated both runs on a sacrifice fly to center, with Anthony Rodriguez scoring to tie the game and Danny Salazar coming all the way around from second on an error during the relay. Silas McKay worked around a two-out walk in the top of the seventh to finish 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and pick up the win.

Ruddy Rodriguez scored on an error and McKay came home on an Eli Ozbek sacrifice fly to make it a 1-1 game after the opening frame. Bryan Abreu singled and scored on an error for Hope in the second and Rodriguez raced home on a passed ball to give his team a 3-1 lead. That was all for the Blue Wave, who stranded Jose Montero after a two-out triple in the third and left a pair in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth.

Andrew Morales looped an RBI single to right in the second to score Betances, trimming the Classical deficit to 3-2. The pitching staff managed to keep it there, as Giodanny Ramos struck out eight over the first four innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Marlowe Warren and McKay didn’t allow a hit over the last three frames, fanning a pair apiece.

The Purple (15-7) now face a rematch with defending champion Woonsocket after suffering a 12-1 defeat Thursday. This was their second playoff win over Hope (8-14), who stunned Providence Country Day in the preliminary round and eliminated North Smithfield the previous afternoon.

EWG 6, Scituate 4

The second-seeded Scarlet Knights jumped to a six-run lead in the top of the third and did just enough from there to eliminate the third-seeded Spartans in this unexpected Pod 2 losers' bracket clash at Manning Field.

Logan Dadona’s RBI single and Dylan Main’s two-run single helped Exeter-West Greenwich get out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Michael Sansone’s steal of home and another RBI single by JJ Langlais handed the Scarlet Knights a 6-0 cushion and was enough support for Dadona, who picked up the victory by battling through 4 1/3 innings on the mound.

Scituate didn’t go quietly, scoring three times in the third thanks to a pair of errors and an RBI single to left by Aidan Ouillette. The Spartans threatened for more in the seventh when Drake Dumont led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Stephen Cronan. Scituate still had the tying run at first when Mason Lemaire induced a flyball to end it, closing his 2 2/3 innings in relief by allowing just one hit.

The Spartans (13-8) were upset by BVPCF to fall into this matchup and dropped two straight to close the season. Exeter-West Greenwich (16-6) now faces the challenge of beating the Warrior Pride twice to reach the best-of-three championship series. The Scarlet Knights suffered their own 9-7 defeat to the No. 7 seed before eliminating Tiverton and Scituate.

La Salle 8, North Kingstown 4

Nikki Pallotta showed why she’s the state’s top offensive weapon, putting on a power display that helped the Rams come back and take care of the Skippers, 8-4.

No. 4 North Kingstown lost 11-1 to No. 1 La Salle on May 13, but looked like a different team in the rematch. The Skippers scored first on a solo home run by Rosemarie Haywood in the second inning, then got a two-run shot from Gabby Peralta in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Feeling good, NK was then struck by an unfortunate injury at the worst time. Ella DaPonte opened the bottom half by dropping a bunt toward third and Peralta, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, was hurt on the play and removed from the game.

Two batters later, Samantha Sell hit an RBI single and Pallotta followed with an RBI double. Erin Moran stepped up and tied the game with a single, giving La Salle momentum for the first time. The Rams opened the fifth with back-to-back home runs from Pallotta and Moran and Ventura added another after the streak was broken. In the sixth, Sell and Pallotta went back-to-back to put things away.

Pallotta finished the day 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs. Sell was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and Moran went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. La Salle moves on to Sunday’s winners’ bracket final and will play No. 2 Chariho on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Mia D’Andrea went 3-for-4 with one run for NK. Peralta led the Skippers with two RBI. North Kingstown drops to the losers’ bracket and will travel to play No. 3 Cranston West Sunday at noon.

Prout 9, St. Raphael 6

The Crusaders came out swinging, gave up the lead, then found a few more runs to pull off a 9-6 upset over the Saints.

No. 9 Prout stunned No. 5 St. Raphael with its offensive proficiency. The Crusaders trailed 2-1 after the first, but got a three-run inside-the-park home run from Rachel Dias to take the lead back and added another run on an RBI single by Sara Slitt.

St. Raphael came back with a big inning of its own, as Sophie Roman and Ella Taylor delivered back-to-back RBI doubles that was followed by an RBI single from Piper McMurray.

The Crusaders used some small-ball in the top of the sixth to take the lead back, with Ana Pearce driving in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Two St. Raphael miscues led Prout add some insurance runs that Megan Gardiner wouldn’t need as she pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game.

Slitt was a beast in this one, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Dias had the three RBI and Mia Boyajian, Kelsea Flaherty and Caroline Smith scored two runs apiece in the win. Prout moves on to the losers’ bracket quarterfinals and will travel to take on No. 6 Westerly Sunday at 5 p.m.

Ponaganset 12, Barrington 0

It was a big day for the Chieftains and a bigger day for Mia Duncan, who hit two home runs in their 12-0 win over the Eagles.

Duncan drove in the game’s first run on a groundout as part of a two-run first inning, but that was merely an appetizer for the main course. Up 3-0 in the third, Duncan hit a solo home run and two innings later, hit a two-run blast that made it 7-0. The Chieftains kept scoring in the fifth, where they plated 11 runs to bring the 10-run rule into play.

Ponaganset hit up and down the order. Duncan went 2-for-4 with the two nukes, four RBI and two runs. SelahMychel went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Cora Miller scored three runs and Claire Barrette was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.

Mattea Mello threw five no-hit innings, walked two and struck out eight and went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win. No. 3 Ponaganset moves on to the losers bracket quarterfinal and will travel to play No. 4 Kent County on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The loss ends the season for No. 7 Barrington.

East Greenwich 6, SK 5

The Avengers started strong and held on tight at the end to eliminate the Rebels from the D-II tournament and keep their season going with a 6-5 win.

No. 9 South Kingstown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Julianna Johnson, but No. 4 East Greenwich answered quick. Chloe Hartman hit an RBI double to get the rally going, Erin Sheeran tied the game with a single and Alessandra Falcon hit a two-run single to make it 4-2 after the first.

The Avs added another run in the bottom of the second and all looked good until the Rebels put up two in the fifth. EG added an insurance run in the sixth, but SK rallied in the seventh and cut the deficit to one with a one-out RBI single by Erica Kostarides.

Kayleigh Chaiyabhat didn’t let the comeback finish. She induced a groundout and fly out to end the game and send EG to the next round.

Falcon had two RBI for the Avengers, Maura Taylor scored twice and Hartman finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. East Greenwich moves on to the losers’ bracket quarterfinals and will travel to play No. 3 Portsmouth. The game is set for Saturday, but could be pushed to Sunday with the predicted storms.

Kostarides led the South Kingstown offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs. The loss ends the season and the careers of seniors Tessa O’Sullivan, Abbie O’Rourke and Grace Palmieiri.

Rogers 12, EWG 0

Lila Leys was practically perfect in the circle and the offense did plenty of damage in a 12-0 win over the Scarlet Knights.

No. 2 Rogers set a tone for the game in the first inning, as Leys struck out the first three EWG batters of the game and then, sparked by an RBI double by Tess Margolis, went on to score three runs. The Vikings added another in the second, two in the third and walked off after scoring sixth in the fourth, the last two coming off an EWG error.

Norah Gardullo and Amelia Wallace led Rogers with two RBI apiece and Wallace, Jazelle Ramos and Margolis scored two runs apiece. Leys threw four innings of no-hit, no-walk ball with eight strikeouts and one runner reaching base on an error.

Rogers advances to the Division III winners’ bracket final and will play No. 1 Tiverton on Sunday at Rhode Island College at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL — D-III losers’ quarterfinals

Middletown 1, Pawtucket 0

The Islanders earned a win when Pawtucket forfeited their losers’ bracket first-round game. No. 7 Middletown is set to play No. 4 Cranston East in the losers’ bracket quarterfinals on Saturday at 12:30, but that game could get moves to Sunday with impending weather issues.

No. 3 Barrington battled to a 7-4 lead over No. 6 North Kingstown after that first period and took flight from there. The Eagles used a balanced attack to apply steady pressure all night, with Ashley DaCosta’s six goals leading the way.

Kendall Blaney and Lilly O’Neil each tallied four apiece while Sophia Scandura netted a hat trick for the winners and Emme Robinson made 10 saves in goal.

Mya Macchioni collected five goals for North Kingstown, which finishes its season at 5-10. Barrington improved to 11-4 and will make a semifinal trip to No. 2 seed East Greenwich for a Wednesday evening clash at 5:30 p.m.
