When I wrote the “final” edition of this series, I warned there could be a revival later in spring. Well, here we are and it’s all about the new portal addition, OL Paris Patterson from SMU. Despite the portal closing months ago, many players are still without a home and Texas decided to take another IOL. Patterson does bring upside but it does raise some questions about how the Texas OL is performing in spring camp.
2025 Stats: 21 offensive snaps, 73.1 pass blocking PFF grade, 0 pressures allowed
Patterson is a former four-star recruit that started his career in Fayetteville, Arkansas with the Razorbacks. After a year there, he entered the portal and made his way to SMU for the last two seasons. Now, he makes his way to his third stop with minimal playing experience but interesting upside.
To me, there are two reasons Sarkisian and company made these additions. Those two options elicit very different levels of confidence around the offensive line. It’s either the interior offensive line still looks like an issue and Texas is looking for any answer OR they like what they have but adding a 6’5”, 323lbs depth piece is worth a flyer. If it’s the former, there is reason to worry around the OL. If it’s the ladder, it’s a great move, especially with the new roster and scholarship rules.
To me, Paris Patterson is not someone I’d expect to start in 2026 nor do I think it’d be ideal if he did. He could be a depth piece and possibly develop into a starter in 2027 but if he’s leaned on in 2026, I have my concerns. Now, I lean towards the starting five for Texas up front is formidable in 2026 but the depth is a question and this doesn’t exactly answer that question.
I believe Texas has made upgrades really across the OL this offense. I believe Goosby-Seymore-Robertson-Baker-Siani will be a strong group up front if all are healthy. Behind them, there are questions and adding Patterson doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence right now.
The one thing to keep in mind here is Trevor Goosby and Laurence Seymore won’t be ready until summer and fall camp. Unfortunately, we likely won’t know how much to worry until August. For now, we’ll see where Patterson fits into the depth chart and if he can have his on-field play match his frame and physical ability.

Paris Patterson saw action in 11 games but saw just 21 snaps on offense, per PFF.
Every one of those snaps on offense came at LG - 16 run block reps and five pass block reps.
In his final two outings vs. BC & UL, he played 17 snaps, and he graded out at his best.
