France ended Norway's winning run in the biathlon World Cup and took victory in the men's 4x7.5-kilometre relay in Ruhpolding, Germany on Thursday.
The Norwegian team had won all of the previous three relay races, but Fabien Claude, Oscar Lombardot, Quentin Fillon Maillet and Eric Perrot led the French side to the top of the podium in 1 hour 08 minutes 58.1 seconds, despite two missed targets.
Norway were 6.2 seconds behind in second and Germany were third, their first time on the podium in the men's relay.
Sweden, who claimed third place in the previous three relays, had to settle for fourth.
Ahead of the event in Ruhpolding, the Norwegian team attended the funeral service of late team-mate Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who was laid to rest on Tuesday in his home town of Lillehammer.
Bakken was found dead on December 23 by team-mate Johan-Olav Botn in a hotel room at a training camp in Italy at age 27.
The Norwegian federation said he wore a mask used for altitude training. The cause of his death is unknown, with autopsy results possibly not available until March.
Botn is not competing at the races in Ruhpolding.
On Thursday, Norway won the women's 4x6km relay. The World Cup continues on Friday with the women's 7.5km sprint.
