Germany emerges as a potential destination to host future ICC events

Germany could become one of the next major markets for world cricket after ICC chairman Jay Shah's visit to the country last month.

According to Associated Press (AP) journalist and Cricinfo contributor Tristan Lavalette, Shah was impressed by cricket's progress in Germany, both on and off the field, during his visit.

The ICC chief has been travelling extensively since taking office and Germany has reportedly emerged as one of the markets attracting significant attention.

"Jay Shah has been globetrotting since becoming ICC boss," Lavalette posted on X. "One of his stops recently was in Germany, where Shah was left impressed by developments on-and-off field."

"There are long-term hopes that Germany - a target market - can host marquee ICC events," he added further.

The ICC has also understood that cricket's future growth will likely come from non-traditional markets rather than countries where the sport is already established.

The visit included discussions with German Cricket president Severin Weiß and vice-president Vignaesh Sankaran in Düsseldorf, where the parties explored ways to accelerate cricket's growth across Germany and Europe.

Germany has traditionally been known as a football powerhouse, having won four FIFA World Cups in 1954, 1974, 1990 & 2014, but cricket has expanded in recent years thanks to immigrant communities and an increased grassroots participation.

What did Jay Shah discuss with German Cricket officials?

According to a report on the India in Europe website, German Cricket confirmed that discussions focused on increasing participation, improving infrastructure, developing coaching pathways, and strengthening Germany's position within the international cricket landscape.

"Speaking after the meeting, the German Cricket leadership expressed optimism about the future and the opportunities ahead for cricket in Germany," the report stated. "The engagement marks an important milestone in strengthening cooperation between the ICC and German Cricket as both organizations work toward a shared vision of growing the game globally."

The Bigger Picture: Can Germany host major ICC tournaments in the future?

While no official plans have been announced, Germany is being considered a potentially attractive host for ICC events in the long term.

It is not expected to happen anytime soon. However, if progress continues, Germany could eventually join emerging cricketing nations such as the United States and Canada (as hosts of the T20 World Cup 2024) in hosting major ICC tournaments.

For German cricket, though, the challenge will be spreading the sport among the local fan base while also building stadiums to match international cricket standards.
