New Delhi: Veteran administrator Imran Khwaja faced a shock defeat as Gurumurthy Palani, Mubashshir Usmani and Rudie van Vuuren were elected as Associate Member Directors of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The election was held during the ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
Palani got 35 votes, Usmani was tied second with Vuuren at 26 votes and Khwaja and Mahinda Vallipuram could manage 23 and 19 votes, respectively.
Khwaja, the current Deputy Chair, was the biggest upset of the day as the election saw Palani and Vuuren enter the 17-member Board for the first time. Usmani has retained his position.
Most of the top brass of the global cricket body, including chairman Jay Shah, were in attendance for the T20 Women's World Cup final at the Lord's on Sunday and then travelled to Scotland for the Annual Conference. Important cricketing matters will be up for discussion during the four-day event which culminates on July 11.
