The road to the OHSSA state wrestling tournament just got busier for three local programs. After a solid showing at the sectional tournaments around the Eastern District on Saturday, Feb. 28. a combined nine wrestlers from Cambridge, John Glenn and Meadowbrook have officially punched their tickets to the district tournament. Keeping their podium dreams alive for another week.
The top four qualifiers in each weight class advance to district competition on March 6-7.
Cambridge advances 4 to districts: Leading the Bobcats' effort at Saturday's Division II sectional was Noah Keen who captured a sectional championship and three others advanced to the district tournament from action on the mat at Steubenville High School on Saturday.
Keen, wrestling at 132 pounds for the Bobcats, won all three of his matches including pinning Leo Wilkes of Beaver in 1:21 to win the individual sectional championship.
With second place finishes, Mason Hill at 144 pounds and Marshal Laishley at 150 pounds both qualified for the district tournament as did Gavin Resor at 157 pounds with a third-place finish. The top four placers in each weight class advance to the district tournament.
Hill received a double bye to start the tournament before beating Nolan Haught of Edison 8-4 in the semifinals before losing to Cooper Smith of Steubenville 4-1 in the championship match.
Laishley pinned Eastyn Gheen of Zanesville in 1:54 in his first match and pinned Oliver Hiller of West Holmes in 3:52 in the semifinals. Laishley lost to top-seeded Roert Buchheit of Beaver 4-2 in the championship bout.
John Glenn produces 3 champions: The Muskies finished sixth in the nine team Division II sectional tournament at Claymont High School, but emerged with a total of three sectional champions who advance on to district competition.
Senior Owen Edwards (157 pounds), Dominic Bates (175) and Kian Barton (215), each captured first place sectional finishes to move to district with titles on their résumés.
Colts send pair to districts: Meadowbrook's Logan Ellis was second (144) and Brayden Jensen third at 120 in the Division III sectional at Sandy Valley to each move on to districts.
