Four is a good number for Oklahoma softball.
It's the number of straight national championships the Sooners won from 2021 to 2024 and, as of Wednesday, it's the number of Oklahoma softball players who named to USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 list. OU is the only team in the country who had four such players on the list.
Gabbie Garcia, a sophomore infielder, is one of just two second-year players among the top 25. With three games left in the regular season and several more expected during the postseason, Garcia has already eclipsed her freshman year totals in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs and walks. Her 22 homers and 66 RBIs both rank third in the Southeastern Conference.
Parker, one of the team's best players in last year's postseason, picked up where she left off this year. The senior outfielder is hitting .430 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs.
Minor and Wells, both freshmen, are the only two first-year players on the list. Minor's .440 batting average is tops among SEC freshman and third in the nation among freshman. She's OU's leader with 66 hits while adding 56 runs, 11 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 17 stole bases.
Wells may be the favorite. Her extraordinary first season sees her leading the country in home runs with 36, a school record, SEC record and freshman record. She's hitting .337 on the season with 79 RBIs and a 1.119 slugging percentage.
The list next narrows to a top 10 on May 13 and a top three on May 18 before the Player of the Year is announced just ahead of the Women's College World Series.
Oklahoma is ranked No. 1 in the nation entering its final SEC series of the season this weekend. The Sooners are set for a three-game set starting Thursday at No. 12 Texas A&M.
