One-third of the USATF Outdoor Championships 1500m final field will be made up of Washington Huskies.
Four former Washington athletes qualified for Saturday's final during the preliminary rounds on Thursday, as Joe Waskom, Reuben Reina, Nathan Green, and Luke Houser all qualified across three heats at Icahn Stadium in New York.
Waskom, a former two-time NCAA Outdoor champion at Washington, will enter as the top-seeded Husky after running 3:41.56 to finish the third and fastest heat in second, behind top qualifier Vincent Ciattei, who ran his collegiate track at Virginia Tech. Waskom is fresh off his best run of the season, finishing in 3:32.52 at the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix earlier this month, and now represents Adidas.
Reina just finished his collegiate career with a final year at Washington after spending his first three seasons at Arkansas, but is listed as representing the Huskies at the US meet. He finished 11th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June in 3:39.15, but ran his season best on July 18 in Belgium in 3:35.85. It was the first time he qualified for the final after finishing fourth in the third heat in 3:41.61.
Green, who is the reigning American indoor champion after running 3:37.65 in March, is also Washington's school record holder and a former NCAA Outdoor champion. His personal best was at the 2024 US Olympic Trials, where he came in fifth in 3:32.20, and just became the seventh-fastest American miler ever at the London race where British runner Josh Kerr broke the world record last week. He has beaten Ciattei back and forth all season and was first in the second heat.
Houser won the two NCAA Indoor Championships that bridged Waskom and Green's outdoor championships, giving the Huskies a dominant run of five straight national titles in the mile that only ended at the 2025 indoor meet when Green lost to Georgetown's Abel Teffra, who was fourth in Green's heat Thursday and did not advance. Now representing Atlanta TC, Houser ran his best race of the season at May's LA Track Festival, finishing in 3:33.93. He ran a comparatively comfortable 3:44.02 in the first and slowest heat to win his section. Houser was part of a team that set the world record in the indoor 4x800m relay in Philadelphia this February.
The final is scheduled to take place around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
