This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Girls Athlete of the Week award is crashing the glass on the basketball court.
Fossil Ridge basketball's Lauren Smith took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of Jan. 26-31 after tying a school record in rebounding.
Smith grabbed 18 boards in a 51-37 win at Loveland on Jan. 30, tying the program's top single-game rebounding mark.
That number included seven offensive rebounds that led to eight second-chance points in the SaberCats' league victory.
It was also an excellent all-around game for the Fossil forward. Smith added seven points, two assists and three steals in the road win.
The senior also had 13 points with two steals and two blocks earlier in the week in a low-scoring but close loss to city rival Fort Collins.
Smith is now averaging over seven points and seven rebounds per game for the SaberCats, who are 8-11 (through Feb. 5) and on track to make the Class 6A playoff field.
Smith is the third basketball player to earn Blue FCU Girls Athlete of the Week honors this winter, joining Fort Collins' Annika VanDalen and Lydia Childs. She is joined by Fossil boys player Jaimeson Peterson this week for a clean Fossil sweep of the weekly award.
Fossil fans made their votes count, elevating Smith to a narrow win with 34.6% of the vote.
