Because the 2020 NBA draft was held virtually, former Washington Huskies star forward Hannes Steinbach will be the first ex-Husky to be in the green room since Markelle Fultz went No. 1 overall in the 2017 NBA draft.
Steinbach, viewed as a potential late lottery pick in next Tuesday's draft in Brooklyn, New York, which will be held at the Barclays Center, won't hear his name called as early as the former UW guard did nine years ago, but he could still be an early selection when draft night comes on June 23.
The 6-foot-11 forward from Würzburg, Germany dominated the Big Ten in his lone season playing for Huskies' coach Danny Sprinkle, leading the team in scoring and on the glass averaging 18.5 points and 11.8 boards over 30 starts.
From the onset of his time on Montlake, the European native was destined to rewrite certainly the UW freshman record books and potentially more.
The All-Freshman Team and Third Team All-Big Ten selection finished his only season in the Pacific Northwest with a school record 22 double-doubles, previously held by Jon Brockman and even withstood by Isaiah Stewart, the last Husky taken highest in the NBA draft going No. 16 overall to the Detroit Pistons in the 2020 NBA draft.
Steinbach, who finished fourth on the team in total assists with 47 this past season, noted last month when asked a part of his game that is underrated is his shot-creating ability despite playing the four.
"I think my passing is underrated," Steinbach said at the NBA draft combine.
The German national said that he feels confident being able to efficiently help create shots at the next level in the paint or on the perimeter, a skill that if fully believed could see executives and general managers poised to take the UW product before Stewart went six years ago.
