The Minnesota Vikings have seen assistant coaches come and go over the years. Under Kevin O'Connell, he has had several notable assistants, but has been able to retain most of them through his tenure. One assistant who got away, though, has been rising up the ranks quickly since he left last offseason.
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is becoming a household name, which is why PFF's Bradley Locker named him among his 15 candidates to become a head coach next offseason.
He writes, "Over the last two campaigns, Udinski has learned under two of the league’s best offensive masterminds in Liam Coen and Kevin O’Connell. In tandem with Coen, Udinski brought out a career-best 83.7 overall PFF grade in Trevor Lawrence and saw Jacksonville go from 25th to sixth in touchdown drive rate. It’s true that Udinski has never technically called plays, but that doesn’t seem like enough to slow his roll as a coaching option. The 30-year-old fits the mold of the next wunderkind worth taking a chance, especially for franchises seeking an offensive boost."
The Vikings may not have Udinski on the coaching staff anymore, but they do have Brian Flores, who remains a potential head coach as well. Either way, the NFL may see another former Vikings assistant roaming a sideline in charge sooner rather than later.
