The UCLA Bruins have made it big time. On Sunday the team captured the program’s first-ever NCAA national championship, with UCLA dominating South Carolina to bring home the trophy. With the win, UCLA has picked up widespread praise for their performance.
Some of that praise even came from a former United States president. Known basketball fan and the 44th president of the United States Barack Obama showed UCLA some love on Twitter following the championship.
“Congratulations to Lauren Betts and the sensational seniors at @UCLAWBB for winning their first NCAA Championship!” Obama tweeted.
UCLA’s senior class was deserving of the praise, with the Bruins six seniors scoring all 79 of UCLA’s points in the championship game. Lauren Betts even received some individual praise from Obama, which makes sense as Betts’ 6’7” frame is hard to miss out on the court.
Betts scored 14 points, brought down 11 rebounds and sent away two shots. She also showed some toughness, leaving the game in the first half with a throat injury before returning and helping the Bruins close out the championship.
Fellow senior Gabriela Jaquez was UCLA’s leading scorer on Sunday, scoring a game-high 21 points and five assists, while bringing the energy required to close out a national title.
Obama attended Columbia University and Harvard, not UCLA, but he couldn’t ignore UCLA’s greatness, as Cori Close’s team wrapped up their 37-1 season as champions.
