.Former North Carolina coach Hubert Davis hopes to return to college basketball within the next two offseasons, he told CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas last week.

Davis, who attended to watch Caleb Wilson and the Chicago Bulls, also discussed the end of his tenure at North Carolina, how he has spent his first unemployed offseason in years and his plans for the future.

Norlander said Davis made clear he wants to coach again.

“He is doing well. He was joyous. Had a great conversation. He wants to coach again,” Norlander said, via Eye on College Basketball. “He’s adamant about wanting to coach again. Next year’s cycle, he’s going to want to pursue that. He wants to get back into the game.”

Davis coached his final game at UNC on March 19, when the Tar Heels squandered a 19-point lead and fell to VCU in a first-round NCAA Tournament loss, their second straight exit in the Round of 64.

Wilson, UNC’s leading scorer and the program’s first top-five NBA draft pick in 21 years, did not play after breaking his thumb in practice two weeks earlier.

UNC offered Davis a chance to resign after the VCU loss, but he declined. The school then paid him a $5.3 million buyout.

Norlander said Davis has spent his time away from coaching traveling, including a trip to Australia.

A former All-ACC guard at UNC, Davis spent nine seasons as an assistant under Roy Williams before returning to his alma mater as head coach. In five seasons in charge, he went 125-54, took the Tar Heels to the 2022 national title game as a No. 8 seed and earned a No. 1 seed in 2024, when they lost in the Sweet 16.
