Former Tennessee baseball infielder Will Maddox was hired as an assistant coach at Georgia State on July 16.
Maddox, who is from Gainesville, Georgia, joins the Georgia State staff after two seasons at Youngstown State, where he started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant in 2025 before being elevated to associate head coach ahead of last season.
Maddox played three years at Tennessee from 2012-14, batting .309 with 60 stolen bases over his career. In 2012, he was selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team after hitting .297 to become only the third freshman since 1980 to lead Tennessee in batting average. The next year, he had a .333 average and was a member of the 2013 USA Baseball collegiate national team.
He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round of the 2014 MLB Drafter after hitting .297 with 21 RBIs after primarily playing second base. Maddox spent six seasons in the minor leagues, spending much of 2017-19 with the Erie SeaWolves, the Tigers' Double-A affiliate, and part of 2019 with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. His career MiLB stats included a .301 batting average, nine home runs and 148 RBIs.
