We've officially entered the training camp edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers' countdown to kickoff. With fans needing to wait only 37 more days until the Steel City brand of football returns when the Steelers host the Atlanta Falcons on September 13, we'll take a look at the most recent and best players to ever wear No. 37.
Nowakowski, the current No. 37 on Pittsburgh's roster, was selected by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft and was listed as a starter on the team's initial depth chart.
The best No. 37 wearer in Steelers history brings us to one of the greatest safeties of the 1990s: Carnell Lake.
Lake, drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft, went on to play in Pittsburgh for 10 seasons, recording 734 combined tackles, 21.5 sacks, 16 interceptions, 15 forced fumbles, and five defensive touchdowns.
Lake left the Steelers following the 1998 season and finished his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars (1998-2000) and Baltimore Ravens (2001).
During his time as a Steeler, Lake earned two First-Team All-Pro selections and three Second-Team All-Pro selections, as well as four Pro Bowl honors. He also earned a final Pro Bowl selection with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1999.
A member of the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, Lake is by far the greatest No. 37 in Steelers history.
