Waynesboro has a new boys basketball coach.
At a called meeting of the Waynesboro School Board Monday night, June 22, Eli Crawford was approved as the new coach, taking over a program that went 5-17 a year ago and has struggled to find success in recent years.
Crawford is a former member of Staunton's Robert E. Lee basketball team, part of the teams that won a state-record 85 games in a row under legendary coach Paul Hatcher from 2003-2006. Crawford played college basketball at Potomac State in West Virginia and Central Florida Community College before transferring to Eastern Mennonite University where he led the Royals to the Elite Eight in the 2010 NCAA Division III tournament.

"I am honored and excited to join the Waynesboro High School family," Crawford said in a press release. "I look forward to building relationships with our student-athletes, families, and community while developing a basketball program that emphasizes hard work, accountability, character, and excellence. Together, we will work to create a culture that makes Waynesboro proud."
Crawford takes over for John Spears, who stepped down after four years as Waynesboro's head coach.
Crawford will be the fourth head coach since C. Jay DeWitt retired in 2016 following 14 years as the school’s basketball coach. DeWitt guided Waynesboro to the state championship game in 2011, part of a three-year run with Waynesboro in the state tournament.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Eli to Waynesboro High School," said Jake Peeling, athletic and activities director for the school. "His passion for developing young people, extensive basketball knowledge, and commitment to building strong relationships with students and families make him an excellent fit for our community. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our student-athletes and the future of our basketball program."
