A former Spartans guard finds himself in an interesting position with his new team.
Former Michigan State men's basketball guard Divine Ugochukwu is one of only four active players on the LSU roster at the moment. Yes, that is right, only four active players listed on the Tigers' official roster.
Ugochukwu elected to jump into the transfer portal late in the window, becoming the lone Spartan to leave via the portal this offseason. He ended up at LSU with new head coach Will Wade, who took a unique path to build out his roster. This included adding a number of international players and players that were attempting to regain college eligibility, but that plan has been mostly foiled by the new five-in-five rule from the NCAA. So now, Ugochukwu is currently part of a roster that is simply lacking players.
Ugochukwu played one season at Michigan State after transferring from the University of Miami (Florida) last offseason. He appeared in 22 games for the Spartans, including 12 starts. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.5 assists per game. He hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds at Rutgers to avoid an upset and posted a career-high 23 points in a win at Penn State in two of his most notable performances with the Spartans.
Ugochukwu's season with the Spartans was cut short due to a foot injury suffered at Minnesota in early February.
It'll be interesting to see how things come together in Baton Rouge, La. this fall and what kind of roster Wade is able to create in his first season there. As it sits now, Ugochukwu will certainly have an elevated role with the Tigers, that's at least looking like a guarantee.
